Your week

What happens in your house, day by day

For a typical three- or four-room job. Your estimate has the dates for your rooms.

  1. Step 1: Before we start

You pick the colors and clear what you can. We confirm the days, and Ray tells you what we'll cover and what you should move.

    You decide, we plan
  2. Step 2: Day 1: cover and prep

You'll see drop cloths, blue tape and the crew filling holes. We're set up by mid-morning.

Hands pressing blue masking tape onto a white wall
    Covering floors and masking
  3. Step 3: Day 2: sand, caulk and prime

You'll see patches sanded smooth and primer on the repairs. Windows are open and the rooms are closed off.

    Patches and primer
  4. Step 4: Day 3: first coat

Ceilings, then walls. The color looks uneven. That's normal, and the second coat evens it out.

Hand rolling white paint beside a strip of blue masking tape
    First coat on the walls
  5. Step 5: Day 4: second coat and trim

Walls get their second coat once the first is dry, then trim and doors.

Man painting around a door frame in a room with a work lamp
    Trim and doors
  6. Step 6: Day 5: touch-up and walk-through

We walk each room with you, touch up what you point out, uncover everything and clean.

Staying home

Living in the house while we work

  • Furniture

Moved to the middle of the room and covered, then put back. Fragile things are best moved ahead of time.

  • Air

We open windows, close off the work area and keep doors shut to the rest of the house.

  • Pets and children

Keep them out of the work area. Ask for the data sheet on the paint for ventilation and drying times.

  • The end of each day

Tools put away, rooms swept, and the covers left so you can walk through safely.

Questions

Questions about the week

How long will it take?

Most three- and four-room jobs take about a week of working days. Your written estimate gives the start day and the days on site for your rooms, and says what happens if a repair or the weather changes them.

Do I have to move out or move the furniture?

No. You stay home. We move furniture to the middle of the room, cover it, and put it back at the end. Heavy pieces and anything fragile are best moved by you ahead of time; the estimate says which.

Is it safe to be home with children or pets?

Ask for the product data sheet for the paint on your estimate. It lists the ventilation advice and the drying and cure times, and we'll open windows and keep the work areas closed off while we're there.

What about condos and HOAs?

If your building limits work hours, elevator use or noise, tell us when you ask for the estimate and we'll plan the schedule around it.
